March 29, 2021Benefits of Salt Therapy
January 6, 2022Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) includes inhaling pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber. The treatment is popularly known for decompression diseases, potential risk of scuba diving. Some of the other diseases treated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy include infections such as bubbles caused by air in the blood, and wounds that may not heal as a result of diabetes or radiation injury.
In hyperbaric oxygen therapy, the air pressure is increased 2 to 3 times higher than the normal air pressure in the chamber. Under these conditions, your lungs can accumulate more oxygen than would be possible by breathing pure oxygen at normal air pressure.
When your blood carries an extra amount of oxygen all throughout your body, it helps fight against bacteria. It also stimulates the release of substances that are called “development factors” and “stem cells,” which help in promoting healing.
Why is it done?
Your body’s tissues also require an adequate supply of oxygen to function normally. When a tissue is injured, it requires significantly more oxygen to survive. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy builds on how much oxygen your blood can carry. With repeated treatment as per the schedule, additional high oxygen levels that are generated will support normal tissue oxygen levels even after the treatment is completed.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy in Hyderabad is used to treat many medical conditions. A few of them are listed below:
- Severe anemia
- Brain abscess
- Air bubbles in your blood vessels (arterial gas embolism)
- Burns
- Carbon monoxide poisoning
- Crushing injury
- Deafness, sudden
- Decompression illness
- Gangrene
- Infection of skin or bone that causes tissue death.
- Non-healing wounds, like a diabetic foot ulcer,
- Radiation injury
- Skin grafts or skin flaps are at risk of tissue death.
- Traumatic brain injury
- Vision loss, sudden and painless
How you plan
You’ll be provided with a hospital-approved outfit or scrubs to wear instead of regular clothing during the treatment.
For safety purposes, items like cigarette lighters or battery-powered devices or electronic devices that produce heat are not allowed in the hyperbaric chamber. Furthermore, you may need to eliminate hair and skin care products that are petroleum-based, as they are a potential fire hazard. Your health care team will provide guidance on preparing you to go through hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
How Does It Operate?
Hyperbaric medicine has been done for a long time. The first hyperbaric oxygen therapy was done in the 1930s by the U.S. Navy for decompression sickness. Treatments in healthcare settings have been done since the 1950s or 1960s.
There are two types of chambers: one is a multi-place chamber, which is like a small cabin, and the other is a mono-place chamber, which is best described as “tubes.” They are smaller and designed for a single person.
Once the patient enters the chamber, it is pressurized, and a hood is placed on the patient, which provides them with 100% oxygen.
The hood is worn by the patients for at least 30 minutes in a single instant, and then they remove it for 10 minutes. The process repeats three times before the daily treatment is completed. During the process, patients are continually monitored by staff members in the chamber.
Before Starting Therapy
The following five facts are most important before entering a hyperbaric oxygen chamber for therapy:
1. Never arrive sick to your appointment
Your treatment may be delayed if you have a cold or other sickness, such as high blood pressure, fever, regular loose stools, or any flu-like symptoms. If the patient is already suffering from cold, during the treatment it could affect their ability to clear their ears, which could lead to inner ear injury.
2. Certain medications should be avoided
Oxygen might change the effects of certain medications. While receiving therapy, there are a small number of medications that can’t be taken in combination with this treatment. For example, a few chemotherapies, a topical ointment used for wounds, and a medicine that prevents alcohol intake in patients with a historical background of alcohol abuse.
Make certain to speak with your doctor and healthcare suppliers in advance to discuss any medications you’re taking.
3. Expect to be there for a couple of hours
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy sessions last nearly two hours and are generally scheduled once a day, five days per week. Your doctor may prescribe at least 30 or more treatments before the therapy is completed. How many treatments you have is often dependent upon how quickly your condition improves.
The treatment normally takes about less than 2 hours (110 minutes of oxygen with a couple of 10-minute air breaks). The remaining time is for the descent and ascent time.
4. You may feel like you’re on a plane from the get-go
Certain people say the start of this therapy feels like flying on a plane. As the pressure builds in the chamber, so does the pressure within your ears, which might leave you with an ear-popping sensation.
5. Some possible side effects to know about
Feeling tired later on, your treatment is ordinary, and so is the pain in your ears or sinuses, or the sensation of fluid developing in your ears.
If you’re claustrophobic, being bound in the chamber could also make you anxious. Vision changes and finger numbness can happen, but both typically occur during the treatment. With the increased pressure and breathing in of 100% oxygen, you could also feel woozy or even giddy.
In a few rare cases, seizures or a collapsed lung can happen due to the treatment, and it can potentially increase the progression of cataracts.
A collapsed lung would possibly happen if the patient had emphysema or one or more lung diseases where air could get caught in small blebs (a blister filled up with fluid) and burst with the pressure changes. In any case, this is incredibly, extremely rare.
How Much Does Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Cost in Hyderabad?
The cost of HBOT in Hyderabad is quite affordable when compared to other countries. The Hyperbaric Medicine cost in Hyderabad is estimated to be at least 60% to 70% less for the same treatment in the UK and the US.
There are many factors that affect the cost of hyperbaric medicine. The type of hyperbaric medicine and the choice of the city are two major factors that determine the overall hyperbaric medicine cost package.
